ETU students fight monsters

Designer Notes: More Setting Rules

First, I want to say thank you with all my heart to those who have backed Fresh Blood on Kickstarter.  It means so much to Preston and I and we hope you like and appreciate our efforts.  Our fans are awesome, and I can’t wait to hear all of your tales and adventures in Pinebox.

Please do us a huge favor and share the Kickstarter to reach as many folks as we can.  Bring more gamers into the Heroic Horror that is Pinebox.

Academics and Testing and Burnout are in a Designer Notes by Preston, but I’ll be going over some other goodies in our Setting Rules Section of Fresh Blood.  All students eventually take a major, or even a double major.  Your major skills are subject to the Skill Specialization Setting Rule as well.

We have a special College Interludes table that focuses on the hero’s life at East Texas University.

We have Creative Combat and of course Extra-Curricular Activities.  These range from Athlete, Auditing Classes, joining a Sorority or Fraternity, Gaming, Jobs, Partying, Performing, Romance, ROTC, Student Organizations, Teacher’s Aide/Tutor, or Volunteer.

Optional Setting Rules we recommend from the Horror Companion include Downtime, Playing to the Tropes, and Wild Cards.

Of course, as we do not wish to infringe on existing Frats and Sororities, we still have a Generator to help the Dean.  Example: Pull a 9 of Clubs.  This generates Pi.  2nd card is the Queen of Hearts. So, the final name is Pi Tau.  The Pi Tau are a (pull 3rd card: 8) Social brother/sisterhood that fosters social affairs and fun (i.e. lots of parties).

Say you want to play bass in a local rock band.  You take the Performer Extra Curricular Activity.  This gives you a +2 Performance and Persuasion with those that know or follow your band. Unfortunately, practice and gigs also give you a -2 to Scholarship for testing purpose.

There is a lot more to help you create the hero you want to play!

For those who haven’t played ETU before, one of the core mechanics is that each Advance corresponds to an exam (either mid-terms or finals). You ARE a student after all, so that means making choices between investigating a haunting or attending a study session. Your academics can be improved or worsened based on extracurriculars and…
